GINA: I knew that if Theo, Squid, and I could stick it out through all of the back-and-forths and ongoing opinions, our three brains together would ultimately pump out a higher level of geniusness than each of us independently.

As a collective, we were making something bigger than our individual selves, and we were fearless when it came to the creative process. We dove in headfirst, determined to discover what possibilities lay ahead. The end results melded our multifaceted sensibilities—high-energy punk, dirgy-riff metal, classic rock and blues riffs. As we grew into our artistry, we were eager to show off. Theo’s versatility as a vocalist put her in a league of her own. She could go from tough, husky barks to stunning operatic roars. Gina pulled from every genre you can think of (seriously, from blues to bossa nova and everything in between) to create different textures and tones that were lit with a billion watts. Squid didn’t just play the root note of the chords; she got underneath, inside, and all around the melodies. As varied as our songs’ musical styles were, they shared a common pursuit: liberally smack the listener on the ass and in the face with NYC attitude. Yes, we wanted to write excellent music. We also wanted you to see colors, hear feelings, and smell power. These songs were the purest means of our collective self-expression, one-way tickets to the nerve center of this entire operation.

We made the cover for the album with photographer Michael Lavine again. On the front, it’s us eating a bunch of food, and on the back, we’re throwing it all up. The whole concept for the title song and art came from an after-school special about bulimia. Now, bulimia is a really serious, awful condition that affects mostly young girls and women. We decided, in our deranged way, “Let’s fuck this up.” It was also kind of a feminist fuck-you thing. People tend to binge and purge in secrecy; there’s a lot of shame associated with it—literally, a lethal amount. Naturally, we decided to do the exact opposite. Food and diets and body image and self-loathing aren’t topics befitting conversation among young women? Load the cannon. Light the fuse.

Also, as friends, we’d bonded over food before we’d bonded over music. Think about what teenagers need: food and sleep. Snacking was very important to us (we were potheads then, after all), and we ate whatever the fuck we wanted. We’d get together and get high and eat.
